Postdoctoral Research Fellows

At UTHealth Houston, postdoctoral research fellows (postdocs) work in an enriching environment to conduct groundbreaking research, have access to state-of-the-art facilities, and build collaborations within the largest life sciences destination in the world. Postdocs are an integral part of a robust research community where supporting postdoctoral training is an institutional priority.
Our Postdoctoral Certificate Training Program provides professional development training to ensure that postdocs acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for any career trajectory. There are numerous courses designed specifically for postdocs, who also have access to courses offered at any of  UTHealth Houston’s seven schools: Cizik School of Nursing, McGovern Medical School, McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, School of Dentistry and School of Public Health, School of Behavioral Health Sciences, and the MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

What our postdocs are saying

"After completing my Ph.D., I decided to advance my professional academic career by beginning a postdoctoral fellowship. Since I have always been interested in the study of pathogenic organisms and their effects on the host (Caenorhabditis elegans), my first choice was to work with Dr. Danielle Garsin. The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, to which Dr. Garsin belongs, has a long-standing reputation and is recognized as a leading institution in the field of microbiological research. Additionally, the program has been a great source of motivation in this position; it has allowed me to grow professionally in other areas, such as management, communication skills, and teaching, among others. The department fosters a respectful, friendly, and highly professional environment, which allows both students and postdocs to feel welcomed and appreciated."

"I was attracted by UTHealth Houston because of its strong reputation in biomedical research and its collaborative environment. The opportunity to work with international experts in my field (Neuroscience), combined with access to cutting-edge facilities, made UTHealth Houston my ideal place for my postdoctoral training. What I enjoy most is the supportive and intellectually stimulating environment, and the very strong sense of community among postdocs, faculty, and staff. I also appreciate the emphasis and help on professional development—whether it's workshops, seminars, or grant-writing support. I’m looking forward to contributing to impactful research and building long-term collaborations. I hope to leverage my experience at UTHealth Houston to secure a faculty position and continue contributing to both science and mentorship in an academic setting."

Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy
"I came across Dr. Yong Zhou’s research at UTHealth Houston at Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology, which immediately caught my attention due to its focus on membrane dynamics and lipid metabolism: Areas that are increasingly recognized as crucial in cancer progression. I noticed that the lab was involved in cross-disciplinary projects, and collaborations within the department and across institutions. This culture of collaboration was very inspiring and strongly resonated with me as it reflects an engaging and supportive research environment. What I enjoy and value most as a UTHealth Houston postdoc is the balance between independence and support. This has allowed me to publish first-author research articles, and in September 2025, I will be joining the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry as a full-time Assistant Professor."
